I was 32 years old, married and the mother of a 12 year old daughter from a previous relationship when I found myself pregnant.  My husband was not happy about the pregnancy and told me I had to “get rid of it.”  I cried.  I didn’t want to have an abortion.  He said if I didn’t, he would leave me.  I didn’t know what to do.  Then, I heard about Birthright.  I called asking if they could help me.  I explained my situation to the kind volunteer.  She listened.  She understood what I was going through.  She explained that I didn’t have to do anything I didn’t want to do.  She said, “Let me help you to have your baby.”  Those were the most powerful words I had ever heard.  Since my husband was constantly pressuring me, sometimes not even coming home at night, playing with my emotions, I realized I had to find somewhere else to live.  But where?  The Birthright volunteer was able to help my daughter and me get into a shelter until we found permanent housing.  She helped me fill out applications to affordable housing in a nice area of town where my daughter and soon to be born baby would be safe.

She then appealed to some wonderful and generous supporters of Birthright and they donated money to purchase a crib, car seat and stroller for my baby.  They connected me with a midwife and I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.  After the baby was born, the volunteer brought us a layette with everything I could possibly need for my baby and even a small gift for my 12 year old daughter and for me.  They checked on us frequently, brought over groceries and made sure we were all ok.  I can never thank or repay Birthright for everything they did for me.  Without Birthright I would not have my precious baby girl.

I wanted to write a quick e-mail to let you know how happy I am that I visited your Birthright centre.  It was the best experience in my life.  The woman there was amazing.  It was like sitting down with my grandma.  She was soft-spoken, sweet and very helpful.  This organization is amazing – helping women and giving support is great.  Sometimes I run into people who are just there for a pay check, but not this Birthright lady.  She is there to truly help girls and women.  I just wanted to let you know that your philosophy at Birthright, “At Birthright, a friend is waiting, for as long as you need one” is definitely being put into action.

It is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth...
And the right of every child to be born.
